Model Engineering Society
The Model Engineering Society are quite well known within the U.K. We are also registered with the Hertfordshire Library Service and of course within our own community. We take part in National Exhibitions, previously at Olympia, Wembly Conference Centre, Alexandra Palace and at Ascot Race course. More than a few of our members have been awarded Gold Silver and Bronze medals at International model exhibitions held in London. We have held the 'Best Stand' award at these shows more times than any other club in the U.K. The Society has access to a 900 feet long circular track where we run live steam locomotives at about 1/10th scale. The driver sits behind and hauls a truck for passengers. The cost of a loco easily equates to that of a small car and requires technical expertise to support and run. We have about 100 members and half of these attend each monthly meeting at Christ Church, St Albans, and we hold our own exhibition at the Francis Bacon School, London Road St. Albans each year in September, we expect about 850+ visitors. You might like to come along and see for yourself. We fill 3 large halls with every type of model making activity and also have train rides and a model boat pool with helicopters flying in the adjoining football field. Last year we had 200 children attend where they had many 'hands on introductions' to modelling. The insured value of models on show is about £100K. I hope the above gives you an idea of the scope of our activities. The Society is celebrates its 60th Anniversary in 2007 having been formed in 1947.
