Banns

Banns are the most common formal and legal procedure where you make an announcement of your intention to marry and a chance for anyone to put forward a reason why the marriage may not lawfully take place. There are other forms of licence which are valid in certain special circumstances. The vicar of the church where you wish to marry will be able to advise you on these matters.

Banns need to be read in the parish where each of you lives as well as the church in which you are to be married if that is another parish.

You must have your banns read out in church for three Sundays during the three months before the wedding. This is often done over three consecutive Sundays but does not have to be.

Once the banns have been read you are issued with a banns certificate. This is a legal document which proves that the banns have been read and allows your marriage to proceed. It must be given to the vicar prior to the wedding ceremony otherwise he will not be able to conduct the wedding.
